It's easy to dismiss the K510i as a low-budget offering amidst a lineup of more impressive Sony Ericssons coming up. So it was surprising to find this triband camera-phone growing on us. Give it some time and you may also find this a compact, delightfully fun and overall well-made package.

Editors' note:
The K510i is available in Singapore from 25 May 2006. The handset will retail for S$498 (US$387.61) without contract and S$398 (US$309.78) with a two-year service plan for Singapore subscribers.

Upside: Available in Midnight Black and Polished Purple, our choice lies with the former. With its velvet black behind and clean-cut façade, the K510i could almost be kin to the higher-caliber Cyber-shot phones. And even though it feels light in the hand (90g)--often misperceived as lightweight in functions, which was what made us overlook this low-end entry earlier--, the K510i is anything but. There's a full HTML browser, Bluetooth, infrared, Java, push email support, music player, speaker, and a full suite of Outlook applications.

Build-wise, Sony Ericsson delivers with a well put-together handset. Everything works, and works well. Menu-wise, you'll find sufficient features to keep this mobile both fun and functional.

As this was a preproduction set, we didn't put those features to the test. However, a quick tour revealed what's clearly a heavier emphasis on the capture-and-share user experience, which ought to appeal greatly to the sociably more adept teenage demographic.

For some time, vendors have been offering VGA cameras in their low- to midrange mobiles. So it's nice to see Sony Ericsson buck the trend with a 1.3-megapixel sensor in this mid-tier budget offering. Onboard you'll also find 4x digital zoom and simple imaging effects such as sepia, colorizing, panorama and Face Warp. We had a lark using this application to warp our Home A/V reviewer's mug into various funny faces, after capturing him on the K510i.

Downside: Sony Ericsson has become synonymous with joysticks on its mobiles. However, not all joysticks are created equal, and this was certainly not one of those high on our list. A tad too sensitive, it would either overshoot or miss whatever action we intended. The keys are also too spaced apart, which made texting a bit more tiresome as you had to work your thumb over the gaps.

Even odder, Sony Ericsson has taken away the photolight even while giving budget buyers a higher-megapixel sensor. For that you'll have to look to an optional flash addon. Sony Ericsson has also provided 28MB of built-in storage space, but no expansion slot. Trigger-happy snappers should take heed.

Our final gripe: The 262K-color TFT display doesn't seem as vibrant, nor as sharp as similar screens we've seen. Then again, this could be a preproduction issue.

Outlook: If you're looking for something just above basic, the K510i is a great little camera-phone in the low-end segment, and for a price we expect to be reasonable, shouldn't be too much of a hardship to get. citeste mai mult[1]
