Asus P565

The Asus P565 was first spotted by our sister site, CNET Taiwan, in September last year. Not much was known about it at that time aside from the fact that it uses an 800MHz processor, a first and the fastest for a Windows Mobile (WM) PDA-phone. The device will go on sale sometime this month and will cost S$888 in Singapore without operator subsidies. Asus has confirmed its availability in Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand for this region. If your country is not listed there, check with your local Asus office to see if it will be launched later.
Design
With dimensions of 102 x 60.5 x 16mm and a weight of 120g, the P565 is just a tad thicker and heavier than its P552w sibling. That's quite an achievement in itself because the increase in number of features compared with the P552w is significant. Most of the device is made of plastic. The front is a glossy black and the sides and part of the back come in a matte silver finish. The battery cover is the most interesting part of the design because it is made of a mock leather material. We've seen this in the BlackBerry Bold and it is supposed to add a sophisticated touch to the design. While faux leather is not one of our favorite handset materials, Asus' implementation on the P565 isn't gaudy and we're confident most users won't have an issue with it.
Like many of HTC's PDA-phones in the Touch series, the P565 also has a screen that's flush with the chassis. This makes it easier to swipe your fingers across the screen when performing actions like scrolling through lists because there isn't a bezel to restrict your movement. Below the display are a directional pad and a few shortcut buttons. There are no physical softkeys so contact with the touchscreen becomes necessary when you need to perform certain actions or bring up contextual menus. We do like the fact that there is an OK key so you don't have to bring your finger up to the top right corner of the screen to get out of programs or confirmation windows.
On the left side of the P565 are volume control keys and a covered port which lets you plug in an external GPS antenna. On the right is a camera button as well as one of our favorite things about Asus PDA-phones, a Hold switch. This feature lets you turn off the screen and lock the device in one movement, just like how it works when you use an MP3 player.
Under the battery cover is where you will find the SIM and microSD card slots. Unfortunately, removing the battery is necessary if you wish to swap microSD cards, an annoying inconvenience if you are used to transferring music and videos onto your removable media using an external card reader.
Another downside about the design is the use of a single mini-USB port for charging, syncing and connecting a wired headset. This is especially bad news for those who use their PDA-phones as music players, as a separate USB-to-3.5mm converter will be needed if standard headphones are to be used. citeste mai mult[2]
