Asus' latest P525 handheld has a rather unique feature. Unlike PDA-phones in the market which offer QWERTY keypads (in addition to a touchscreen display), the P525 comes with a numeric keypad. While some may question the usefulness of number buttons versus a QWERTY thumbboard for data entry, the Asus clearly offers something not many other PDA-phones can, and that is the convenience of using the device just like a mobile phone.
Editors' note:
According to Asus, the P525 is expected to be available in Singapore at the end of the year. There are no prices set for this handheld yet, but you should be able to get a good indication from the HK$5,290 (US$679.51) list price announced during its launch in Hong Kong in late July/early August.
Design
Asus has done a good job in keeping the P525's design simple yet pleasing. The grey exterior, which combines plastic and brushed metal finishing, blends in smoothly with the slightly indented buttons along the sides, giving the handheld a rather sleek look and feel. Mobile users, especially business professionals, should find the PDA-phone aesthetically appealing. They will also find assurance in the sturdy build quality of the device. The dark external casing should keep scratches and stains to a minimum.
At 159.5g, the P525 is surprisingly light for a handheld with a numeric keypad. It measures a compact 116.8 x 59 x 19mm, which will fit easily into bags but not pockets. For this reason, Asus has included nifty black waist pouch (that can be attached to the belt) for those who prefer to keep the handheld always within easy reach.
The P525 is one of the few PDA-phones in the market today which offers both numeric keypad and touchscreen display for data entry. Besides smart phones such as the Sony Ericsson P990i, the only other recent handheld device with a similar feature is the upcoming O2 Xda Stealth. Understandably, a number keypad may not help much for those who plan to type long email messages on their handhelds, but it certainly offers the closest mobile phone experience that one can get from a PDA-phone, particular when SMS texting and making phone calls.
We like that the buttons on the P525 are arranged in such a way that they can be operated using just one hand. On the sides of the handheld, you can find buttons for the camera, voice message, volume control, reset (hidden) and power as well as a switch to activate the hold function. The hold (or keylock) switch is a thoughtful addition as it is almost unavoidable pressing the number keys every time the handheld is inserted into the pouch.
The tiny joystick located in the upper half of the number keypad is relatively responsive for navigational control and so are the numeric buttons. However, we had some minor gripes with the keypad. By positioning the slightly protruding joystick between the "2" and "5" keys, there's a tendency to accidentally activate the joystick when pressing the respective buttons, which can be rather frustrating at times. Also, the buttons emit a louder-than-usual plastic keypress sound when depressed.
By having a number keypad instead of a QWERTY thumbboard, Asus was able to equip the P525 with a bright 2.8-inch QVGA LCD, as compared with the 240 x 240-pixel display on the HP iPaq hw6965. It's a pity the screen supports only 16-bit colors. Memory expansion comes in the form of a miniSD card slot at the top of the device, while a USB port and 2.5mm audio jack can be found at the bottom. The speaker, flash and camera are housed on the back of the unit, just above the battery compartment.
